How do the two concepts, critical readings vs. critical literacy, relate to your own content area? How might teachers in your content area incorporate the two concepts? Does it make sense to do so? Why or why not?
in the content area of english, reading and literacy are key. i know they are important in all content areas, but english tends to revolve around texts. however, critical reading and critical literacy are added levels to the basics. texts should be examined, questioned, and evaluated on more than a simple language arts class level. questions like, "what do you think the social implications of this novel were?" should be asked about significant works. what is important in this novel? what is not? do the concepts described apply today, why or why not? there are so many ways to incorporate the concept into simply reading a novel, nevermind any of the other kinds of texts that could be utilized. it makes a huge amount of sense to incorporate both critical reading and critical literacy into an english/language arts class. without them, you're just seeing the words on the page.
